The three islands of Mukojima, Chichijima, and Hahajima are sometimes collectively called the Ogasawara Islands, and since the early Meiji period they have also been called the Bonin Islands (a foreign pronunciation of "uninhabited islands"). The Ogasawara Islands were formed by the uplift and dissection of a submarine volcano from the Paleogene period, and the Iwo Islands and Nishinoshima are volcanic islands that began activity in the latter half of the Quaternary period.
