1515‐65 A monk from the Yi Dynasty of Korea. His pen names were Hyeo-do and Nam-an. He devoted himself to studying the scriptures and practicing Zen at Mount Kumgang, but in 1548, he was entrusted with the trust of regent Queen Munjeong (mother of King Myeongjong), and as the head priest of Bongeunsa Temple, he established the Zen sect at Bongeunsa Temple and the Kyo sect at Bonseonsa Temple, set up a monk's department, and established the Docho system, which was a certificate of permission to enter the priesthood. He thus revived both Zen and Kyo sects, ushering in the revival of Buddhism in the Yi Dynasty. However, he faced strong opposition from Confucian scholars such as Yi Yulgok, and after the death of the queen, he was stripped of his monk position and exiled to Jeju Island, where he was killed by a stalk. His works include Hyeo-doshu. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
