…Surgical treatment of the heart was first performed in 1896 by Ludwig Mettler Rehn (1849-1930) of Germany, who successfully operated on a cardiac injury. However, serious attempts to diagnose and operate on heart disease were not made until 1939, when Robert Gross (1905-) of the United States successfully operated on a patent ductus arteriosus. In 1945, Gross and Clarence Crafoord (1899-) of Sweden successfully operated on a coarctation of the aorta, and Alfred Blalock (1899-1964) of the United States performed a vascular anastomosis operation to treat tetralogy of Fallot with good results. Interest in cardiac surgery suddenly increased. Since then, there have been remarkable advances in cardiac surgery over the past 50 years, and heart transplantation has become accepted as the standard treatment in many foreign countries. …
