Discoteque

...However, since the late 1970s, the term has come to be widely used to refer to rock or soul dance (disco dance) and music made for dancing (disco music, disco sound). This comes from the fact that in the 1960s in France, dance halls that used records instead of dance bands were called "discotheques." This gradually spread to the United States in the 1970s, and was shortened to "disco."
