Holy Roman Emperor. Reigned 1637-57. Son of Ferdinand II. King of Hungary from 1625 and King of Bohemia from 1627. During the Thirty Years' War, after Wallenstein aroused the emperor's suspicions and was assassinated (1634), he was given command of the imperial army. As the war dragged on with the entry of France, he tried to achieve peace from 1641 onwards, but resistance from the various princes prevented him from achieving his plan to strengthen Habsburg power within the empire. 神聖ローマ皇帝。在位1637‐57年。フェルディナント2世の子。1625年以来ハンガリー王，27年からはボヘミア王の位にあり，三十年戦争においてはワレンシュタインが皇帝の猜疑を招き暗殺(1634)されてのちは，皇帝軍の司令権を委ねられた。フランスの参戦で戦争が長期化するなかで，41年以降，和平の実現につとめたが，諸侯の抵抗により帝国内でのハプスブルク勢力強化の企図は果たしえなかった。【成瀬治】
