1608‐57 Holy Roman Emperor. Reigned 1637-57. Son of Ferdinand II. King of Hungary from 1625 and King of Bohemia from 1627. During the Thirty Years' War, after Wallenstein aroused the emperor's suspicions and was assassinated (1634), he was given command of the imperial army. As the war dragged on with the entry of France, he tried to achieve peace from 1641 onwards, but resistance from the various princes prevented him from achieving his plan to strengthen Habsburg power within the empire.
