Eupen - Oipen (English spelling)

An industrial city in eastern Belgium, in the province of Liège, near the German border. Population 17,606 (2002). It faces the Besdre River, a tributary of the Meuse (Mause). It is part of the German-speaking region ceded by Germany after World War I, and, together with Malmedy to the south, it belongs to the German-speaking Community established with the transition to a federal system in 1993. It is part of the Aachen metropolitan area in Germany. It is home to Belgium's largest dam and a hydroelectric power station. The electrical machinery, wool, and food processing industries are well developed. It serves as a tourist and recreation base for the Hautes Fagnes region.

ベルギー東部、リエージュ州のドイツ国境に近い工業都市。人口1万7606（2002）。ムーズ（マース）川の支流ベズドル川に臨む。第一次世界大戦後にドイツより割譲されたドイツ語圏で、1993年の連邦制移行に伴い発足したドイツ語共同体に、南のマルメディとともに属する。ドイツのアーヘンの都市圏に入る。ベルギー最大のダムがあり、水力発電所がある。電気機械工業、羊毛工業、食品加工業が発達。オートファーニュ地方への観光、保養基地となっている。
