An industrial city in eastern Belgium, in the province of Liège, near the German border. Population 17,606 (2002). It faces the Besdre River, a tributary of the Meuse (Mause). It is part of the German-speaking region ceded by Germany after World War I, and, together with Malmedy to the south, it belongs to the German-speaking Community established with the transition to a federal system in 1993. It is part of the Aachen metropolitan area in Germany. It is home to Belgium's largest dam and a hydroelectric power station. The electrical machinery, wool, and food processing industries are well developed. It serves as a tourist and recreation base for the Hautes Fagnes region.
