World Commission on Environment and Development. Established in 1984 at the suggestion of Japan, 21 members from various countries who are knowledgeable about regional environmental issues continued to hold discussions, and the committee concluded in 1987 with the compilation of a final report at its eighth meeting. It is commonly known as the United Nations Special Committee on the Environment.
