German cartographer. Born in Bleijerod, he studied cartography in Potsdam, and first worked on maps under A. von Humboldt. From 1845 to 1847 he worked at the Johnston Cartographical Works in Edinburgh, and then from 1847 in London, where he produced population maps and atlases of physical geography. In 1854 he moved to the J. Perthes Geographical Institute in Gotha, where he produced the Stieler Atlas and in 1856 founded Petermann's Geographical Bulletin. This is known worldwide as one of Germany's leading geographical journals.

ドイツの地図学者。ブライヘロデに生まれ，ポツダムで地図作成技術を学び，最初はA.vonフンボルトの下で地図作成に従事。1845‐47年エジンバラのジョンストン地図製作所，次いで47年からはロンドンで人口地図，自然地理学の地図帳などを作成した。54年にはゴータにあるJ.ペルテス地理研究所に移った。そこで，《シュティーラー地図帳》を作成，56年には《ペーターマンズ地理学輯報》を創刊。これはドイツの代表的地理学雑誌の一つとして世界的に知られている。
