1822‐78 German cartographer. Born in Bleijerod, he studied cartography in Potsdam, and first worked on maps under A. von Humboldt. From 1845 to 1847 he worked at the Johnston Cartographical Works in Edinburgh, and then from 1847 in London, where he produced population maps and atlases of physical geography. In 1854 he moved to the J. Perthes Geographical Institute in Gotha, where he produced the Stieler Atlas and in 1856 founded Petermann's Geographical Bulletin.
