Isokratēs

Japanese: イソクラテス(英語表記)Isokratēs
Isokratēs
[Born] 436 B.C. Athens
Died 338 BC. Athenian Greek prose writer, orator, and educator. One of the ten greatest orators of Attica. After working as a teacher of rhetoric and a writer of court speeches, he opened a school separate from the Sophists' school around 392 BC, where he taught not only oratory but also a wide range of general education with the aim of shaping character and educating the whole person, and placed importance on morality. Since opening, he has attracted students from all over the Greek world, and has produced many outstanding politicians, orators, and historians. As a political debater, he consistently advocated Greek unification and an expedition to Persia, and became a pioneer of Hellenism. As a prose writer, he valued rhythm and harmony, and created a well-balanced, flowing, and rich style by layering beautiful words and long sub-statements. Twenty-one speeches and treatises and nine letters have been handed down.
