...The lute's revival in Germany coincided with the time of the great musician JS Bach, who was also drawn to the instrument and left behind several valuable lute pieces for posterity. Sylvius Leopold Weiss (1686-1750), who was an acquaintance of JS Bach, was also a master of late lute music. The lutes used in the 17th and 18th centuries had a much larger number of extra strings to reinforce the bass than the Renaissance lutes mentioned earlier, and instruments with 13 courses and 24 strings (the top two were single strings) and 14 courses and 26 strings (same as above) were also used. ...
