Dance of Darkness

Japanese: 暗黒舞踏 - あんこくぶとう

A type of contemporary dance. It was started by Hijikata Tatsumi as a leader and named in 1959 at the "650 Dance Experience Association." It is characterized by violent eroticism, aiming to bring to the surface what lies beneath the surface of everyday life and gestures that have been buried in the darkness, without relying on established dance techniques such as ballet or modern dance. After Hijikata's death, it has been actively pursued by groups such as "Hakutobo" (Hakutobo), led by Kazuo Ohno, Yoko Ashikawa, and Shizune Tomoe, "Dairakudakan" led by Akaji Maro, and "Sankai Juku" (Sankai Juku) led by Ushio Amagatsu, and has been highly acclaimed overseas.

現代舞踊の一つ。土方巽が指導者となって始めたもので，1959年の「650ダンスエクスペリエンスの会」において命名された。既成のバレエ，モダン・ダンスなどの舞踊技術に頼らず，日常生活の裏面にあるもの，暗闇のなかにうずもれてしまった身ぶりを浮上させることを目的に，暴力的なエロティシズムを特徴とする。土方の死後は，大野一雄や芦川羊子，トモエ静嶺 (しずね) らによる「白桃房」，麿赤兒率いる「大駱駝艦」，天児牛大 (あまがつうしお) の「山海塾」などによって活発な活動が展開され，海外でも高い評価を得ている。
