The central island of the US state of Hawaii. It is a volcanic island formed from an extinct volcano, and coral reefs have developed on its coasts. It is in the tropics and is known as a world-famous tourist destination, with the state capital, Honolulu, as its center. There is a US military base at Pearl Harbor.
