Domenico Veneziano

Italian painter active in the mid-15th century. Dates of birth and death unknown. His name suggests he was from Venice, but he is counted among the Florentine painters. He is known to have been in Perugia in 1438, and from 1439 to 1445 he painted a mural of the Life of the Virgin Mary (no longer extant) in the cloister of the Church of Sant'Egidio in Florence. The Carnesecchi Altarpiece, thought to be an early work, still shows strong traces of the Gothic style in its poses, facial types, and thrones. However, the rich and varied colors, skillful handling of natural light, and precise perspective seen in the Santa Lucia dei Magnoli Altarpiece, thought to have been created in the late 1440s, show that he was already a Renaissance painter.

15世紀中ごろに活動したイタリアの画家。生没年不詳。名前からベネチア出身と推測されるが，フィレンツェ派の画家に数えられる。1438年にペルージアにいたことが知られ，39‐45年にはフィレンツェのサンテジディオ教会の回廊に，聖母伝の壁画(現存せず)を描く。初期の作とされる〈カルネセッキ祭壇画〉は，そのポーズ，顔のタイプ，玉座などに，いまだにゴシック様式の残滓が強い。しかし40年代後半の作と思われる〈サンタ･ルチア･デイ･マニョーリの祭壇画〉に見られる豊かで変化に富んだ色彩，自然の光の巧みな処理，正確な遠近法は，彼がすでにルネサンスの画家であることを示している。
