…He was elected to the House of Representatives (1884-91), but rejected parliamentarianism. When the Social Democratic Union under his leadership decided not to participate in elections, Troelstra and others left and formed the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP) in 1894. He then increasingly leaned towards anarchism, and in 1897 he withdrew from the Social Democratic Union, founded the magazine De Vrije Socialist, and preached anarchism and anti-militarism. In recent years, his ideas have been reevaluated, and the Domela Nieuwenhuis Museum was opened in Amsterdam. …
