Devotio moderna (English spelling)

[Modern Monastic Ideas]
From the end of the Middle Ages to modern times, the monastic spirit was reborn in a state of great change. Like the Abbey of Agnetenberg where Thomas à Kempis lived, about 50 monasteries belonging to the "Common Life Brothers" founded by Grote spread a pietistic movement called "Devotio moderna" (New Faith) among the people in the Netherlands and Germany, and in Italy, a new monastic organization called "Congregatio monastica" (Monastics) was born, which incorporated the structure of mendicant orders into the traditional contemplative monasteries. Many brotherhoods were formed in Italy from the 15th to the 16th century, among which the Theatine Order was born in 1524, and four years later the Capuchin Order was founded with the aim of reforming the Franciscan Order.

From [Evangelicalism]

...the movement and underlying ideas that attempted to purify and renew the Catholic Church's faith in Western Europe in the early 16th century prior to the Reformation. The "Devotio moderna" (New Piety) movement, which sought to revive a lively, inner faith centered on Christ, had already spread from the Netherlands to northern France since the Middle Ages. Erasmus and Lefebvre d'Etaples, who grew up under its influence and were also trained in humanistic methods, sought a new way of Christian faith by reexamining the original Hebrew and Greek texts of the Bible and ancient patristic literature, which had previously been ignored by the Church. The former's "Instructions for the Christian Soldier" (1504) and "Critique of the Greek New Testament" (1516), and the latter's "Collation of the Psalms of the Old Testament" (1509) and "Annotated Epistles of St. Paul" (1512) were the results of this effort, and answered the question that many people had at the time: "How should we believe?"...

From [Lois Brook]

…He preached the way of union with God as the bride of Christ, and his bold and emotional expressions, such as those seen in “The Wedding Ornaments of the Spirit,” caused many misunderstandings, but they also inherited the traditions of the Greek Church Fathers. He was somewhere between Eckhart, Tauler, and Flöte, and had a great influence on the “Devotio moderna” (meaning “new faith”) movement. [Minoru Minamihara]…
