De Santis, G.

...One of the producers who supported "Neorealism," he nurtured the actress Silvana Mangano (1930-89), and became known internationally as "the king of Italian movies." He later moved to the American film industry and produced a number of major works. After graduating from Rome's "Centro Sperimentale di Cinematographia" (Experimental Film Center) and serving in the military during World War II, he produced "Bitter Rice" (1948), directed by Giuseppe De Santis, which added eroticism to "Neorealism," and became an international hit, promoting the "muscular actress" Silvana Mangano who played the heroine (and marrying her in 1949). In 1950, he founded a production company with filmmaker Carlo Ponti, which produced such films as Europa 1951 (1952) directed by Roberto Rossellini, The Strada (1954) and Nights of Cabiria (1956) directed by Federico Fellini, and War and Peace (1956), an American-Italian coproduction directed by King Vidor.
