An old town in Kimotsuki County, in the southwest of the Osumi Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture. In the Middle Ages, it was the territory of the powerful Nejime clan. The town produces sweet potatoes and tobacco leaves, and is thriving in livestock farming, including Wagyu beef and pig farming. Camphor is a specialty of the town. The town is a port town overlooking Kagoshima Bay, and there is a regular ferry service to Yamakawa Town (now Ibusuki City). 鹿児島県大隅半島南西部,肝属(きもつき)郡の旧町。中世は豪族禰寝(ねじめ)氏の領地。サツマイモ,葉タバコを産し,和牛飼育,養豚などの畜産が盛ん。樟脳(しょうのう)を特産する。中心は鹿児島湾に臨む港町で,山川町(現・指宿市)へ定期船が通じる。2005年3月肝属郡田代町と合併し町制,錦江町となる。84.91km2。7412人(2003)。
