Teraphim (English spelling)

Japanese: テラピム（英語表記）Teraphim

A statue of a family god used in household worship, mentioned in the Old Testament. The Israelites also used it during the settlement period (Judges 17:5), and it was in the room of Saul's daughter Michal (Samuel 19:13). Later Yahwehists condemned its use as idolatry. In the patriarchal tales, Jacob's wife Rachel stole teraphim from her father Laban's house and hid them under the saddle of a camel (Genesis 31). The documents excavated at Nuzi suggest a connection to the right of inheritance.

旧約聖書で言及されている，家の礼拝に用いられた家族神の神像。イスラエル人も土地定着時代にはこれを用い(《士師記》17：5)，サウルの娘ミカルの部屋にもあった(《サムエル記》19：13)。後代のヤハウェ主義者たちはその使用を偶像崇拝として非難した。族長物語では，ヤコブの妻ラケルがその父ラバンの家からテラピムを盗み出して，ラクダの鞍の下に隠したという(《創世記》31)。ヌジ出土文書から財産相続権とのかかわりが推測される。
