Onchocerca volvulus

Also known as Onchocerciasis rotunda. A type of worm found in tropical regions such as Africa and Central and South America, it causes onchocerciasis. It belongs to the phylum Psectinatus, class Nematoda, family Dipetalonematidae. The adult worm is a long, slender nematode (roundworm) with a body length of 33.5-50 cm for females and 19-42 mm for males, about one-tenth of that length, and a body width of 0.3-0.4 mm or 0.1-0.2 mm, respectively. It parasitizes in the subcutaneous tissue of humans by forming a coiled mass.

回旋シジョウチュウ(糸状虫)ともいう。アフリカ，中南米などの熱帯地方に分布するシジョウチュウの1種で，オンコセルカ症の原因となる。袋形動物門線虫綱ディペタロネマティダエ科に属し，成虫の体長は雌33.5～50cm，雄はその約1/10の19～42mm，体幅はそれぞれ0.3～0.4mm，あるいは0.1～0.2mmで細長いセンチュウ(線虫)であるが，ヒトの皮下組織内にコイル状になって寄生し，皮下腫瘤(こぶ)を形成する。
