…The Germanic Baroque is especially prominent in the field of religious architecture, where the intoxicating sensual expression of the Italian Baroque is combined with a strong desire for spatial composition to create a world in which architecture, painting, and sculpture are all one. Relatively early on, the architects of Vienna's St. Karl Borromaeus Cathedral (1716) include JB Fischer von Erlach and J. Plantauer, followed by J. L. von Hildebrand and Paul Decker (1677-1713). In the field of court architecture, there are works such as the Zwinger Palace (1711-28) built in Dresden by Matthias Daniel Pöppelmann (1662-1736) of Saxony, and the Belvedere Palace by Hildebrand in Vienna. …ゲルマンのバロックの特徴がとくに顕著なのは，宗教建築の分野で，イタリア･バロックの官能の陶酔を誘う表現に，強い空間構成への意志が加えられて，建築，絵画，彫刻が渾然一体となった世界が構築されている。わりに早い時期に属するのは，ウィーンのザンクト･カール･ボロメウス聖堂(1716)を造ったJ.B.フィッシャー･フォン･エルラハやJ.プランタウアーなどで，これにJ.L.vonヒルデブラント，デッカーPaul Decker(1677‐1713)らがつづく。また宮廷建築においても，ザクセンのペッペルマンMatthäus Daniel Pöppelmann(1662‐1736)がドレスデンに造ったツウィンガー宮殿(1711‐28)や，ヒルデブラントのウィーンのベルベデーレ宮殿などのような作品があり，イタリアに端を発する大階段室のデザインは，ゲルマン文化圏において，もっとも幻想に満ちた世界を構築するに至っている。…
