Yukimura - Sesson

Japanese:
Yukimura - Sesson

A Zen monk and painter-monk from the late Muromachi period. Born in 1112 in Ota, Hitachi Province (Ibaraki Prefecture) as a member of the Satake clan. His year of death is unknown, but the Eight Views of Xiaoxiang Screen, with an inscription written when he was 86, is known, giving us an idea of the approximate years during which he was active. His given name was Shukei. He also went by the names Kakusen, Kakusen Rojin, and Funakyosai. He is thought to have trained as a Zen monk, but the details are unknown, and it is also unclear from whom he learned painting directly. His personal admiration for Sesshu is mentioned in his "Setsumondei-zui" (Setsu Mendei-zui), a book in which he himself published his theory on painting in 1542 (Tenbun 11), but it is believed that he also studied Song and Yuan paintings more broadly, especially those of Mokkei and Gyokukan, and created his own style. Currently, two "Eight Views of Xiaoxiang" scrolls (Masaki Museum of Art, Osaka and private collection) are known, which imitate these two Chinese painters. He traveled to Odawara, Kamakura, Aizu-Wakamatsu, and other places, spending his life in the Kanto and Tohoku regions. In his final years, he became acquainted with Ashina Moriuji of Aizu, and retired to Miharu, near Aizu, where he established a hermitage. The site of this hermitage still exists today. Although he was a local artist, he produced many powerful works with excellent dynamic expression that are appropriate for the turbulent Sengoku period. His representative works include "Wind Waves" (Nomura Museum of Art, Kyoto), "Pine and Hawk" (Tokyo National Museum), "Flower and Bird Screen" (Yamato Bunkakan, Nara), and "Lü Dongbin" (same as above).
