Paper mache dolls are a local toy that have been made in the Miharu Town area of Fukushima Prefecture (formerly the Miharu Domain) for a long time. They are also called Miharu paper mache. Older works are highly artistic. Before the Shotoku and Kyoho periods (1711-1736), the seventh feudal lord, Akita Kennosuke, invited doll makers from Edo to make paper mache toys called "deku" and "deko," and gave them a "deko mansion" to teach the techniques to farmers. Later, they flourished during the Bunka and Bunsei periods (1804-1830), with themes from kabuki and ukiyo-e, but declined after the Meiji period. They were revived during the folk art boom after World War II, and various types such as children with children, head-shaking tigers, and dancing figures are made.
