Although there are no literary circles based on racial unity among Jews, the literature of Jews based in Trieste, including contemporary writers A. Moravia, N. Ginzburg, G. Bassani, and literary critic Giacomo Debenedetti (1901-67), has a hidden influence in Italy. Italo Svevo (a pen name meaning Italian-Swabian), who was the first to incorporate the unconscious and split consciousness into his novels, was close to J.
