French playwright and poet. His real name was Charles Messager. Born in Paris to a journalist father. He started out as a poet leading the Abbey School and Unionism movement, with friends such as Jules Roman and Georges Duhamel, whose motto was to portray group psychology. However, after his stage success in 1920, after the First World War, his work The Merchant Ship Tenacity was performed, he turned to playwriting. He subsequently published works such as Michel Auclair (1923), The Poor Man (1923), Madame Belliard (1925), The Gardener of Samos (1928), and The Quarrel (1930), which showed a stronger tendency towards introspection. In any case, he gained mass popularity in the interwar period, especially in the 1920s, by drawing heartwarming and delicate dramas from the themes of ordinary people's lives. He is also famous for his long animal fable, "The Lion's Glasses" (1932). He visited Japan once before World War II. He died on June 28, 1971 at his villa in Saint-Tropez, southern France.
