A deciduous tall tree of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae). It grows to a height of 10-20 meters. The leaves are elliptical, 8-14 cm long, pointed at the tip, and slightly heart-shaped at the base. In April and May, the reddish leaves and scattered five-petaled flowers, 3-4 cm across, bloom. It grows wild in Hokkaido, the San'in region of Honshu, Hokuriku, and north of the Chubu region, as well as the Ishizuchi Mountains of Shikoku, and is also distributed in the southern Kuril Islands, Karafuto (Sakhalin), and Korea. It is used as a garden tree and for lumber. Its flowers are larger than those of Yamazakura, hence the name, and its darker flower color means Beniyamazakura, and its abundance in Hokkaido means Ezoyamazakura.
