Located in Enmae-cho, Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto City, this temple belongs to the Koyasan Shingon sect. It is called Komyo-san and commonly known as Senbon Enma-do. It is said to have originated when the priest Jokaku started the Dai-Nembutsu-odori dance at the beginning of the Kannin era (1017-21). A statue of Enma (made in the Muromachi period) is enshrined in the main hall, and on the wall is a painting of the underworld by Kano Mitsunobu. A standing statue of Ono no Takamura is also enshrined. The Rokusai Nembutsu-odo dance, which is performed to welcome the spirits of deceased during the Obon festival (August 8-16), is a familiar annual event with a strong local flavor. In late April, when the cherry blossoms (also called Senbonzakura) around the Fugenzo statue in the temple are in full bloom, a Nembutsu Kyogen performance (known as Enma-do Kyogen in contrast to Mibu Kyogen) is held. The Jujuishitoba (10-story stone pagoda) (made by En Asakusa), known as the memorial tower for Murasaki Shikibu, is a national important cultural property.
