…In response, the native Croatian feudal nobles, in order to compensate for the losses caused by Turkish rule, adopted an oppressive attitude towards the peasants, and large-scale peasant uprisings broke out frequently in various places. The largest of these was the uprising led by Matija Gubec (?-1573) in 1573. All of the peasant uprisings were completely suppressed, and many peasants were massacred, which also meant the further weakening of Croatia's national power. …
