An insect of the Noctuidae family in the Lepidoptera order. Its English name is turnip moth, and its Japanese name Kaburayaga is derived from this. The larvae are well known as pests of various vegetables, flowers, and other plants in farms and gardens. They span about 4cm. The color of the forewings varies considerably, but males are pale gray-brown and females are slightly darker. The hindwings are also nearly white in males and gray with dark wing veins in females. The larvae hide on the ground during the day and climb up to low plants at night to eat the leaves. The larvae of this moth are called root-cutting insects because they have a habit of cutting the roots of flowers and crop seedlings, causing them to fall.
