Dar al-Funūn (English spelling)

...In order to restore the Qajar dynasty, which was in social turmoil due to the Babi religious movement, and was financially depleted and the military was weak, he protected and nurtured traditional industries, especially the textile industry, which had been hit hard by the import of European cotton products, and worked to promote new industries such as glass, sugar, and weapons manufacturing. In order to introduce European learning and technology, he also established the Dar al-Funūn, an institution of higher education based on a European curriculum, in 1851. His reforms were not necessarily successful, and in November 1851 he was dismissed from his position as prime minister, and in January of the following year he was executed in Kashan, where he had been imprisoned.
