These are diaries in which entries on specific matters are excerpted from diary records and compiled into categories. From the mid-Heian period onwards, as the etiquette and customs of court ceremonies and public affairs became more precise, the descriptions in the diaries of court nobles also became more detailed, while at the same time the trend of respecting precedents grew stronger, and buruiki were created to facilitate the review of precedents. This was modelled on the compilation of rule books which had been popular in China from an early period and which had been actively produced in Japan since the early Heian period, and numerous buruiki were produced by the end of the Edo period. They can be broadly categorized into four types: (1) those in which a single item is excerpted from a single diary, (2) those in which excerpts covering multiple items from a single diary are compiled, (3) those in which a single item is compiled from multiple diaries, and (4) those in which multiple items from multiple diaries are compiled into categories.
