Salt addict - Ento (English spelling) yan-tu; yen-t`u
In China, a group of people who smuggled salt under the salt monopoly. They were also called salt bandits or salt owls. When the monopoly was implemented, consumer prices soared and people were often forced to buy low-quality salt, which led to smuggling. The salt bandits banded together, stockpiled weapons, and fought against the government forces. They made huge profits and used their economic power to lead rebellions, and some even became emperors themselves. The former included Huang Chao (→ Huang Chao Rebellion) at the end of the Tang Dynasty and Zhang Shicheng at the end of the Yuan Dynasty, while the latter included Wang Jian, founder of Former Shu during the Five Dynasties period, and Qian Liu, King of Wu Yue.
