A genus of about 60 species in the family L. indica (Burmit.) Merr., distributed in the Old World tropics. Common in forest edges and riverside wetlands. Herbaceous shrubs with simple or large compound leaves resembling L. indica pinnately divided into two or three times, sometimes growing to over 5 m in height, with well-developed pith in the stems. The leaves at the top of the stems bear small, small, yellow-green, yellow or red flowers in corymbs, arranged opposite each other. The fruit is a globular berry sometimes over 1 cm in diameter, containing a large seed. Like L. indica (Burmit.) Merr., the young shoots and fleshy fruits are sometimes eaten, but it is cultivated in greenhouses primarily for the leaves, colored inflorescences and fruit. Merr.
