A prefix derived from the Greek word meaning "inside". It is mainly used as one of the symbols to indicate the steric relationship of substituents attached to non-bridging atoms of bicycloalkanes. The shortest bridge is used as the base, and the substituents attached to the other bridges farthest from the base are represented as endo -. For example, the hydroxy group of borneol is in the endo position. It is also used in a general sense to indicate the position within the ring of a monocyclic compound.
