…In 1754, he served in the colonial wars as a lieutenant colonel in the militia, and due to his many military achievements he became commander of the Virginia militia, laying the foundations for his later role as commander-in-chief in the war for independence. In 1759 he married a wealthy widow, Martha Custis (1732-1802), adding to his vast fortune and making him one of the wealthiest men in America. He became a representative in the colonial assembly and entered the political world as a notable figure, but he did not hold any particular leadership position. …
