Higan pufferfish (Fugu pardalis)

Japanese: ヒガンフグ(彼岸河豚) - ヒガンフグ（英語表記）Fugu pardalis

A marine fish (illustration) of the Tetraodontiformes order, family Tetraodontiidae. It has local names such as Akamefugu (Tokyo, Tateyama, Amakusa, etc.) and Nagoyafugu (Misaki), but it is a different species from the Akamefugu F. chrysops , which is endemic to Japan. It is distributed from Uchiura Bay in Hokkaido to the Korean Peninsula, Okinawa, and the mouth of the Yangtze River in China. It has a stocky body and a thick caudal peduncle. Its skin does not have any spinous protrusions, but has small soft wart-like bumps all over it. The back of the body is brown with irregularly scattered dark brown or black spots.

フグ目フグ科の海産魚(イラスト)。アカメフグ(東京，館山，天草など)，ナゴヤフグ(三崎)などの地方名があるが，日本特産のアカメフグF.chrysopsとは別種である。北海道内浦湾から，朝鮮半島，沖縄，中国の長江河口付近にわたって分布。体はずんぐりしていて，尾柄部も太い。皮膚に棘状（きよくじよう）突起はないが，一面に軟らかいいぼ状の小隆起がある。体の背部は褐色を帯び，濃褐色ないし黒色の斑紋が不規則に散在する。
