Around 1290 - 1345 Flemish politician. Also read as Altevelde. A wealthy brewer from Ghent, he became a political leader in Ghent during the early years of the Hundred Years' War. The Flemish cities, which prospered in the wool industry and imported wool from England, had close ties with England. In 1337, he united the cities and, with the support of King Edward III of England, rebelled against France and the Count of Flanders. The French fleet was defeated by the English fleet at the port of Bruges, and in 1338 the Flemish cities persuaded the French king to grant them various city privileges and trade with England.
