Flemish politician. Also read as Altevelde. A wealthy brewer from Ghent, he became a political leader in Ghent during the early years of the Hundred Years' War. The Flemish cities, which prospered in the wool industry and imported wool from England, had close ties with England. In 1337, he united the cities and, with the support of King Edward III of England, rebelled against France and the Count of Flanders. The French fleet was defeated by the English fleet at the port of Bruges, and in 1338 the Flemish cities persuaded the French king to grant them various city privileges and trade with England.

フランドルの政治家。アルテフェルデとも読む。ヘントの富裕なビール醸造業者で，百年戦争初期にヘントの政治的指導者となる。毛織物業が繁栄し，イギリス産羊毛を輸入するフランドル諸市は，イギリスと密接な利害関係にあった。彼は1337年，それら諸都市を糾合し，イギリス王エドワード3世の援助をえて，フランスおよびフランドル伯に反乱を起こした。ブリュージュの外港でフランス艦隊はイギリス艦隊に敗れ，38年フランドル諸市はフランス国王に種々の都市特権やイギリスとの通商を承認させた。
