...The English name cockroach is an English translation of the Spanish word cucaracha, and a similar variant is asparagus being used as sparrow grass. In America, the German cockroach is called the Croton bug, which is the name of a river that became the source of water for New York City in 1842, and the name was given to cockroaches because the number of cockroaches increased around the time the river was created. Cockroaches are also sometimes called black beetles, because they resemble beetles.
