A legendary figure in the founding of Rome. Son of Proca, king of the Latin city of Alba, after his father's death, he deprived his brother Numitor of his rights and became the 15th king of the city. He killed Numitor's sons and made his daughter Rhea Silvia a Vestal virgin, who had to remain a virgin, as a precaution against the revenge of Numitor's descendants. However, Rhea gave birth to Romulus and Remus using the seed of the god Mars, and the twins, who Amulius had thrown into the Tiber River, were miraculously saved. When they grew up and learned their true identities, they killed Amulius, put Numitor on the throne of Alba, and founded Rome themselves.
