...A piece of music intended to improve playing technique, or a piece that uses a special, highly advanced technique as a means of expression. Also called an etude. They began to be composed especially as instrumental music flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries, and J. Dowland's son Robert Dowland's (c. 1591-1641) lute instruction book "Various Lute Lessons" (1610) and J. Playford's violin instruction book are counted among the most important early exercises.
