Kannamesai - Kannamesai

Japanese:
Kannamesai - Kannamesai

Also known as "Shinjosai" or "Kannie no Matsuri", this is the grandest annual festival at Ise Jingu Shrine, held every year from October 15th to 17th. It originates from the myth that Amaterasu Omikami ate Niiname in the heavenly Takamagahara, and is a festival in which the new grains harvested that year are offered to the god as Yuki (meaning pure and untainted) Omike. With a history dating back to the shrine's founding, it is colored by legends such as the legend of the Manazuru crane, which is connected to the Yatsukaho rice grains, and the Mijokuden rice field in Yata on the banks of the Isuzu River. It appears in the Taiho Code as a national ordinance, and in the Engishiki it is also designated as an important national ritual, second only to the Senso Daijosai. The order of the ritual is as follows: at Toyouke Daijingu (Geku), Yuki Daimise is offered on the evening of October 15th and at dawn on the 16th, an imperial envoy visits the shrine at noon on the 16th to offer offerings, and in the evening, Mikagura dance is performed. At Kotai Jingu (Naiku), each ritual is held one day later. The ritual of offering offerings dates back to the reign of Emperor Gensho (reigned 715-724), was discontinued during the reign of Emperor Gotsuchimikado (reigned 1464-1500), but was revived by Emperor Gokomyo (reigned 1643-54). In 1864 (Genji 1) during the reign of Emperor Komei, offerings of Nozaki silk and horse offerings were also made. On the day of the Kannamesai, the Imperial Family pays homage to the shrine from afar, and a main ceremony is held at the Kashikodokoro. Before World War II, it was designated a major national holiday.
