Credential society

...a society in which educational background is important as a determining factor for people's professional status, and more generally, social status. This term began to be widely used in Japan from the beginning of the 1960s, and in the 1970s in Western countries, the equivalent term, credential society, began to be used by social scientists. It was only after the establishment of modern industrial society that educational background became important as a determining factor for social status, such as occupation.
