…About 100 years after the death of Shakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism (thought to have been around the time of King Ashoka in the mid-3rd century BCE), the Buddhist sect gradually split into about 20 schools, which established the complex and magnificent Abhidharma (abhidharma) and engaged in debates. The Buddhism of this period is called Hinayana Buddhism, and is comparable to the Christian scholastic philosophy of the Middle Ages in the West.
