Onoe Matsunosuke
Year of death: September 11, 1926
Year of birth: September 12, 1875 (Meiji 8)
A film actor from the Meiji and Taisho periods, and Japan's first big star. Born in Okayama City. His real name was Nakamura Tsuruzo. He appeared on stage from an early age, and became a traveling theater actor, touring the country with a troupe, but was invited by film director Makino Shozo to enter the film world. His debut film was "Goban Tadanobu" (1909). His glaring, wide-eyed performance in the third film, "Ishiyama Gunki," made him popular, and he was affectionately nicknamed "Matsu-chan the Eyeball." After that, he appeared in many period films under Makino, focusing on fight scenes and ninjutsu, and became an idol for young fans, especially in ninjutsu films using trick photography. He played all kinds of protagonists, including heroes, brave warriors, righteous men, and gangsters, and is said to have appeared in 1,000 films across Yokota Shokai and Nikkatsu. His main appearances include "Jiraiya," "Falling Flowers Dance," "Araki Mataemon," and "Chushingura." He was buried at Toji-in Temple in Kyoto. <Works> "Autobiography of Matsunosuke Onoe"
