…The difference between a farmhouse and a samurai is that it has a front entrance with a pedestal and the dirt floor is not as wide as a farmhouse. Lower-ranking samurai such as foot soldiers and ashigaru soldiers were not given individual houses, but lived together in tenement houses called foot soldiers' houses or ashigaru houses. Their houses usually had a narrow dirt floor with a room of about two rooms and no tokonoma alcove. Samurai houses disappeared rapidly after the Meiji Restoration, and many castle towns were damaged in World War II, so architectural remains remain only in small cities such as Iwakuni and Hagi (Yamaguchi Prefecture), Sakura (Chiba Prefecture), and Kakunodate (Akita Prefecture), and the number is extremely small compared to the remains of private houses. …
