…The difference between a farmhouse and a samurai is that it has a front entrance with a pedestal and the dirt floor is not as wide as a farmhouse. Lower-ranking samurai such as foot soldiers and ashigaru soldiers were not given individual houses, but lived together in tenement houses called foot soldiers' houses or ashigaru houses. Their houses usually had a narrow dirt floor with a room of about two rooms and no tokonoma alcove. Samurai houses disappeared rapidly after the Meiji Restoration, and many castle towns were damaged in World War II, so architectural remains remain only in small cities such as Iwakuni and Hagi (Yamaguchi Prefecture), Sakura (Chiba Prefecture), and Kakunodate (Akita Prefecture), and the number is extremely small compared to the remains of private houses. …

…農家との違いは，門から入った正面に式台つきの玄関を構えていることと，土間が農家ほど広くないことである。武士の中でも徒士（かち），足軽などの下級者は個人的な屋敷はもらえず，徒士屋敷，足軽屋敷などと呼ばれる長屋などにまとまって住み，住宅も狭い土間に二間（ふたま）程度の部屋がつき，床の間もないのが普通であった。　武家屋敷は明治維新の後急激に消滅し，多くの城下町が第2次世界大戦の戦災を受けたこともあって，建築遺構が残っているものは，岩国･萩(山口県)，佐倉(千葉県)，角館(秋田県)など地方の小都市にしか例がなく，民家遺構に比べてもきわめて少ない数になっている。…
