…In the United States, as in the UK, horse-drawn railroads began appearing at the end of the 18th century, but in 1827 the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was granted a construction license and opened in 1830. At first, they tried to use horses or sails, but in the same year that the railroad opened, Peter Cooper (1791-1883) built a prototype locomotive called Tom Thumb and successfully completed a test run, so the railroad began to fully adopt steam locomotives. The Charleston and Hamburg Railroad and the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad, which were in the planning stages at the time, were also soon to be established as railroads using steam power. …
