He is the grandson of Emperor Kōgen's son, Ohiko no Mikoto, and a legendary figure who is said to be the ancestor of the Zen clan. In ancient times, the Zen clan was responsible for preparing meals for the emperor, but during the reign of Emperor Tenmu, the clan changed its surname to Takahashi Ason. The origin of his duties is told in the "Takahashi Ujibun," which is quoted in the chapter on Emperor Keikō in the "Nihon Shoki," as well as in "Honchō Gekkei" and "Seiji Yōryaku." According to these, when Emperor Keikō went on a voyage to the eastern provinces, he accompanied him and, chasing an osprey offshore in Kazusa Province, caught some hard-shelled fish and clams, which he brought back and cooked into a marinade and presented to the emperor. The emperor praised his achievement and gave him the surname Zen no Omi. He is enshrined at Takaka Shrine (Tateyama City), which has a deep connection to this legend.
