This water and land transport company, which had its origins in the Land Transport Company, which was established by a group of former regular couriers, was heavily protected by the government throughout the early Meiji period. The Land Transport Company, which was established in Tokyo in 1872 (Meiji 5), was a transport contractor that transported government mail and general cargo using men and horses from land transport companies that had been established at each station along the route around the same time. However, when the post station system was abolished, the government forced the former post office officials to establish land transport companies at each station, but these often went against the freedom of traffic, and there was no hope for their development as private enterprises.
