Quantitative flame photometry. Qualitative flame photometry involves identifying elements by observing the color of light that emerges when a sample is illuminated in a flame. In contrast, flame photometry is a method of quantitative analysis in which a wavelength specific to an element is selected and the intensity of that light is converted into an electrical quantity. In particular, when a spectroscope is used to select and measure an arbitrary wavelength, this is called flame spectrophotometry. A simple method is to combine an interference filter and a photoelectric tube for measurement.

定量的な炎光分析法。試料を炎の中で光らせると出てくる元素に固有な光の色を見て判別するのが定性的な炎光分析であるが，これに対して，元素に特有な波長を選び出し，その光の強さを電気的な量に変換して定量的に分析する方法を炎光光度法という。特に分光器を使って任意の波長を選び出して測定する場合，これを炎光分光光度法という。簡単なものとして干渉フィルタと光電管とを組合せて測定する方法がある。
