During the Muromachi period, this group was a group of experts in various arts, including painting and the tea ceremony. They were followers of the Jishu sect, and formally became monks and took the name Ami, taken from the six-character name Namu Amida Butsu. After Ashikaga Yoshinori, they served as companions to the shogun family and served as the shogunate's Chinese goods magistrates, providing advice on appraisals, painting, and the use of various tools. In a narrow sense, this refers to the ink painting style of the three generations of Noami, Geiami, and Soami (the Sanami), which continued for about 100 years from the Oei to Daiei eras (15th and 16th centuries), and is characterized by landscape paintings with flexible brushwork based on the Song and Yuan dynasty paintings owned by the shogun family.

室町時代，絵画，茶の湯など諸芸の専門家の一派。時宗(じしゅう)の門徒で，形式上出家をして南無阿弥陀仏の６字の名号からとった阿弥を名前につけた。足利義教以降将軍家の同朋(どうぼう)衆，幕府の唐物奉行(からものぶぎょう)として鑑定，画作，諸道具の使用法等の相談にあずかった。狭義には応永〜大永年間にかけ（15―16世紀），約100年続いた能阿弥，芸阿弥，相阿弥の３代（三阿弥）の水墨画の画風をいい，将軍家所蔵の宋元画を規範とした柔軟な筆法の山水画を特徴とする。
