Zheng Xuan (English name)

Zheng Xuan (English name)
[Live] Yongjian 2(127). Beihai, Gaomi
[Died] Jian'an 5 (200)
A scholar of the Later Han Dynasty of China. Also read as "Teigen." He was a great master of classics, on a par with Zhu Xi of the Song Dynasty. His pen name was Kangcheng. He became a low-ranking government official at a young age, but later advanced to the Taixue School and studied under Ma Rong and others. He was imprisoned for 10 years for his involvement in the "Party Ban" and thereafter devoted himself to learning without serving in any other government for the rest of his life. He took the position of ancient literature and debated with the modern literature school, but he also studied modern and ancient literature, and revised the texts of almost all classics and major Wei texts, establishing a unified viewpoint and clarifying their interpretations. Many of his works have been lost, but the "Comments on the Analects," "Comments on the Lies of Zhou," "Comments on the Rites," "Comments on the Book of Rites," and "Comments on Mao Shi Zheng" have been handed down and are still the basis for classics research. The "Zheng Xuan Lost Book" is a collection of theories that remain in various books.
